🥝 One Great Leader, Dying SDLC, Coherent Actions, Debts, Skip Levels, Dev Environments, Recovery, Juggling: TMW #470

The fake job applicants are coming! Learn how to spot them early
💊
Thank you to QA.tech for sponsoring this week's TMW - end-to-end QA with AI testing tool for a modern dev workflow.

Hello, hello, hello, welcome to the week!

The AI Wore A Suit

The most active Slack thread this week was sparked by members comparing notes on a wave of fraudulent job candidates using AI tools, deepfake video filters, and fabricated identities - many posing as engineers based in Eastern Europe. The discussion ranged from genuinely alarming links to North Korean remote worker infiltration schemes, to practical detection tips, to some very funny interview anecdotes (fish drawings, "loading faces," and a fridge ordering caviar...). It closed with a detailed red-flag checklist that deserves a wider audience - and an open question about whether piling on more screening processes is actually the right response, or whether trusted referral networks are the smarter long game.

  • Deepfake candidates are a real and growing problem: bare-minimum LinkedIn profiles, suspiciously perfect answers, and reluctance to use a virtual whiteboard are the most common tells.
  • Early, cheap background checks beat late, expensive interview time: most ID validation services only charge for completed checks, making them a low-risk first filter.
  • The community was split on the solution: more detection process vs. fewer, higher-trust hiring channels. What do you think?

Imagine your next hire turns out to have been AI-assisted through every stage of your screening process - what's the single step that would have caught them?

That's it, let's look at some links....

Trade test maintenance for feature velocity

Your team builds faster than ever with AI - but QA hasn’t kept up. Manual testing breaks under that velocity.

QA.tech brings AI-native testing agents that scale with your code, eliminating QA as a release bottleneck.

Teams at Nordea, Pricer, and Upsales already use QA.tech to cut thousands of hours of manual testing, reduce QA spend, and ship faster.

With QA.tech, you can:

  • Match testing velocity to development velocity
  • Eliminate the maintenance tax from brittle test suites
  • Validate every release on time with AI

The first 20 TMW Readers to start a PoC receive up to $20,000 in usage credits.

Real Conversations for CTOs and senior tech leaders

Join CTO Craft for a half-day gathering in a city near you for senior technology leaders who want practical insight rather than surface-level talks. In 2026, we'll be visiting Stockholm, Berlin, London and NYC.

While the format remains consistent at each stop - small-group roundtables and peer-led discussion - every event is shaped by its local context. Attendees, facilitators, and discussion topics differ from city to city, ensuring each gathering reflects the challenges and opportunities CTOs are experiencing in that region.

Each session is designed to create space for honest conversation, shared problem-solving, and connections that continue beyond the day. Tickets for each city are limited - don't miss your chance!

It’s not often that a force appears that totally re-orients everything in security. This is what we are facing with AI. 12 months ago I had an incrementalist view of the cybersecurity impact of AI. Specifically, that it will be very significant but things will change progressively and we’ll adapt to adversarial use while also using it to improve defenses. Now, I’m coming to a view that this will have a bigger negative impact than even our worst assumptions. But at the same time, it represents an
